It's a cruel summer...
I broke my finger skateboarding. No, it’s not the normal skateboarding injury, but I fell just right—just right enough to dislocate my left ring finger and crack off a little piece of its bone. I had surgery on it the other day, and it’s all wired back together now. It does hurt, though.
In what follows, I’m sharing two interviews—one on the radio and one you may have seen already—and two upcoming book events—one of my own and one by one of my best friends. We’ll get back to our irregularly scheduled program once I heal up. Enjoy!
The Archipelago featuring Roy Christopher: Against the Human
Wide-ranging journalist Yannis-Orestis Papadimitriou recently invited me to appear on his show the Archipelago on Stegi.Radio in Athens, Greece. Yannis introduced the episode as follows:
There are some cultural products that are based on the human experience. Some others draw inspiration from beyond the human experience. And then, there are some who are against the human itself.
The music of industrial metal band Godflesh is such an example. And when Roy Christopher began to write a book on the band’s seminal album Streetcleaner, his project gradually over time became Post-Self, a philosophical treatise on the non-human.
In this episode, Roy Christopher, cultural critic, Instructor at the University of North Florida and author of the book Post-Self: Journeys Beyond the Human Body, talks about the music of Godflesh, the philosophy of that which is not human and the great legacy of Marshall McLuhan.

Roy Christopher is, in his own words, “an aging BMX and skateboarding zine kid,” with a history of writing and publishing about life, music, film, and everything else from a perspective that might be best labeled post-punk, although no label quite captures his restless textual extravagances and insights. Christopher has two books currently in circulation and both of them chart the post-everything mad bad dangerous and intriguing zeitgeist we’re all experiencing in the delirious 21st century.

Literary Indulgence Book Festival
I’ll be at the Literary Indulgence Book Festival at Florida State College’s Kent Campus here in Jacksonville on July 18th! Mostly I’ll be hanging out at table #14 with my books, but I’m also participating in the Voices from the Classroom panel at 1pm on the Courtyard Stage. I’m planning to read a little bit from a couple of my books (Post-Self and The Medium Picture), and there will be a Q&A session after. Come through!
