Last week, Fevers of the Mind published two poems I wrote recently. I am reposting them here for your reading convenience.
The Saddest Thing
I thought I had seen
The saddest thing when
I saw a dead duck
On the sidewalk
Her neck a broken question mark
Asking
I thought I had seen
The saddest thing when
I saw a drowned cow
Sunk in the shallows
Her body a sack of meat and mud
Drinking
I thought I had seen
The saddest thing, then
Mimi Parker died
Dark curls gone limp
Her voice still up on a note
Singing
To Feel Warm
I came home and
The stove clock read 350
And for a moment
I thought I'd left the oven on
Preheating the day
Like the Florida sun
I did get the message you sent
I'm pretty perceptive
Even if I can’t take a hint
Perhaps we could prop each other up
If only to see what it meant
To feel warm
Fevers of the Mind previously published two of my other poems this summer (“San Diego” and “Like a Totem”) and a “Quick 9” interview with me in 2021.
Check out the site. Lots of good stuff up there.
ICYMI:
If you like these little poems, I have a whole chapbook of them available from First Cut Poetry called Abandoned Accounts (Most of them are happier than the ones I shared above, so don’t be scared to check them out).
As always, thank you for reading,
-royc.
